Turism

Situated in northen part of Moldavia, Bucovina is one of the most beautiful areas in Romania. This area is characterised by its unique landscapes. Picks and valleys with isolated, spread houses and fields create images that will remain as memories for a long time.

Bucovina is the land of monasteries, which are part of UNESCO heritage in "Great Monuments of the World" section from 1993.

Muşat Family, Alexander the Good, Ştefan the Great, Petru Rareş, Ştefan Tomşa, Alexandru Lăpuşneanu, Movila Family are the main founders of these monasteries.

Suceviţa Monastery (Suceviţa)

The monastery is documentary certified 1582, during the reign of Petru Şchiopul the first ruler from Basarab Family (Muntenia, southern province of Romania) ascended on the Muşat Families throne.

The architecture ot the church contains both Byzantine and gothic elements, and some elements typical to other painted churches of northern Moldavia. Both interior and exterior walls are covered by mural paintings, which are of great artistic value and depict biblical episodes from the Old and New Testament. The paintings date from around 1601, which makes Suceviţa one of the last monasteries to be decorated in the famous Moldavian style of exterior paintings.

The interior court of the monastic ensemble is almost square (100 by 104 meters) and is surrounded by high (6 m), wide (3 m) walls. There are several other defensive structures within the ensemble, including four towers (one in each corner). Sucevița was a princely residence as well as a fortified monastery. The thick walls today shelter a museum that presents an outstanding collection of historical and art objects. The tomb covers of Ieremia and Simion Movilă – rich portraits embroidered in silver thread – together with ecclesiastical silverware, books and illuminated manuscripts, offer eloquent testimony to Sucevița's importance first as a manuscript workshop, then as a printing center.

In 2010, the monastery has been inscribed by UNESCO on its list of World Heritage Sites.

Bogdana Monastery (Rădăuţi)

Situated in Rădăuţi downtown, about 20 km from Sucevita, the monastery was built by Bogdan I of Moldavia (1359–1365) somewhere around 1360 and initially was a necropole for his family. In 1559 the ruler of Moldavia, Alexandru Lăpuşneanu enlarges the construction by adding and replacing the stoned windows borders.

Over the years it became a monument of culture and an important model in development of the architecture. The church represents a remarkable mixture between the romantic, gothic and bizantine architecture. It is also the first religious construction made of stone in Moldavia. Throught its architectural and decorative qualities, Bogdana Monastery became one of representative monuments in Romania, being included in UNESCO heritage.

Putna Monastery (Putna)

Putna Monastery is an orthodox monahal place, one of the most most important cultural, religious and artistical centers. It was called "The Jerusalim of the Romanians" (M. Eminescu).

The monastery is situated at 35 km from Sucevita.

The monastery was an important cultural centre; here manuscripts were copied. The place also held a museum with important manuscripts, paintings and art objects.

The old Romanian chronics say that the monastery was built by Stephan the Great (whose tomb is here) between 1466 and 1469. The present church was practically rebuilt between 1653 and 1662 by Vasile Lupu and his successors. Although the building follows the ground plan of a typical 15th and 16th century Moldavian church, it has many architectural and decorative features that are characteristic of 17th century architecture.

Putna monastery is one of the most representative monument for the Romanian artistic and cultural heritage.

The monastery was included in UNESCO heritage.

Voroneţ Monastery (Voroneţ)

The monastery is situated in the Voronet village, at 56 km from Sucevita and only 4 km from Gura Humorului downtown. It is one of the most valuable foundation of Stefan the Great. It was built in 1488 in just four months and half, which is a record at that time. It is one of the famous painted monastery in Suceava county.

The legend of its origin unites forever two great personalities in our national destiny: Stefan the Great and Father Daniil the Hermit, the abbot of church and one of the greatest saints that Moldavia had. A

candle is guarding Daniil the Hermit’s tomb, from where people get the blessing.

The architecture is subordinated to the painted decoration.

The interior painting of the church originates from the time of Stefan the Great, year 1496.

The exterior painting originating from time of Petru-Rares, an illegitimate child of Stefan, is realized at a high artistic level, being seen as the best example of Moldavian feudal art. Often known as the "Sistine Chapel of the East", the frescoes at Voroneț feature an intense shade of blue known in Romania as "Voroneț blue".

The biblical figures are close to life, natural, the colours are fresh, close to nature, mostly blue and green.

Because of its artistic complexity, the monastery has earned its place between the great worlds masterpieces.

Arbore Church (Arbore)

The church is situated at 24 km from Sucevita.

Church Arbore dedicated to Saint John the Baptist is an orthodox church built in 1503 by Luca Arbore, known because Stefan IV, grandson of Stefan the Great, was ruler between 1517 and 1523 under his regency.

The construction of the church was completed in about 5 months. Its exterior paintings date from 1541 and were made by Dragoş Coman. Painting the church took about 40 years.

Its painted church was the first Moldavian painted church to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 with other six churches from Northen Moldovia (Humor, Moldovița, Pătrăuți, Probota, Suceava ("St. John the New") și Voroneț).

Humor Monastery (Mănăstirea Humorului)

Humor Monastery located in Mănăstirea Humorului, about 56 km from Sucevita. It is a monastery for nuns dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary, or Theotokos. It was constructed in 1530 by Voievod Petru Rareş and his chancellor Teodor Bubuiog. The monastery was built over the foundation of a previous monastery that dated from around 1415. The Humor monastery was closed in 1786 and was not reopened until 1990.

Humor was one of the first of Moldavia's painted monasteries to be frescoed and, along with Voroneţ, is probably the best preserved. The dominant colour of the frescoes is a reddish brown. The master painter responsible for Humor's frescoes, which were painted in 1535, is one Toma of Suceava.

Humor Monastery was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List from 1993.

Moldoviţa Monastery (Vatra Moldoviţei)

Moldoviţa Monastery is one of the oldest monk settlements, with an important and glorious historical past, situated in Vatra Moldoviţei la o distanţă de circa 33 km from Sucevita on DN17A.

The origin remains a mister of its time, tradition reminds of its existence since Musat Family, who protected it. Under peaceful reign of Alexandru the Good, protected by its founders it survived until XV- century, when it collapsed, due the bad terrain. The ruins are at 500 meters from new monastery. The new church was rebuilt in 1532 by ruler of Moldavia Petru-Rares, Stefan the Great's illegitimate son. Also, he covered it with defence towers and walls, making it look like a small fortress.

The painted church of the monastery is part of UNESCO world heritage monuments.
